Frances K. Jean is passionate about family, history and nature. Drawing on these interests in More than Oil: Trappers, Traders and Settlers of Northern Alberta, she shares the development of Fort McMurray through memories, stories and anecdotes.
Born and raised in Westbank, British Columbia, Frances, and her late husband Bernard, moved to Fort McMurray in 1967, raising her family and welcoming grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the following years.
An entrepreneur, Frances maintains her interest in family business and community endeavours; writes and enjoys her garden, cooking and baking.
Irwin Huberman moved to Fort McMurray in 1976 after receiving his Bachelor of Journalism degree from Carlton University and a time of working for the Ottawa Citizen and the Sunday Express. He joined the editorial staff of the daily newspaper in Fort McMurray and then did a one-year stint at Syncrude Canada Ltd., before launching his own weekly newspaper in 1979.
His column - "On the Street," quickly became a "must read" within the community and remained popular with readers until the enterprise was sold in 1991.
Like many who have lived in Fort McMurray, Irwin Huberman is continuously drawn back to the northern community, if not physically, at least emotionally. This echoes the spirit of many who have moved on from the community, but still call Fort McMurray home.
Irwin and his family currently reside in the New York City area where he is now a Rabbi.
